Sitting along my L-shaped table at home whilst reading the gossip about Jeanette Aw and the Joanne Peh “Best Actress Award” Issue, i chanced upon an interesting topic. “How does your school “brand” you?” . I refer to The Straits Times Newspaper 27th April 2009 Section B(Home) page B9. interesting. Well just this afternoon me, Mr T C C, together with Adam, were just talking and exchanging our opinions with ample understanding that everyone has his or her personal opinions or at least thats what me and Mr were doing..as for Adam, usual him was sitting there listening and only gave his opinion when asked for. Then we came to a topic of “What defines a Good School?”
“The Students la!” came Adam’s most confident reply.
I remained Silent as if I was thinking through what he said.
Then an overpowering voice shot out something which I couldn’t remember(pardon me=P).
Well that session opened me to a different point of view. Something which i never thought anyone could. Thanks
Well then i returned home hoping to find something interesting to read about. I did. Not about the “AW.. “story …
How Does your school BRAND you??. Coming from a relatively well recognized Primary School, Nan Hua Primary School(NOT NAN YANG). During my time, known as the top 5 Primary Schools in Singapore. I am currently in the school who people can recognize once they catch sight of their BOLD hairstyles and shorter than mini ,Skirts, and socks..WHAT SOCKS?! Basically I’ve sorta gone through what people would define as a “GOOD” school and “NOT SO GOOD SCHOOL”(apart from being politically correct I also have this loyalty to ALL my schools so, don’t ever insult my school without my permission). I should perceive my perspective would be rather balanced.
Anglo-******* (independent), Hwa ***** Institution, River ****** High, R****** Institution, St J***** Institution and C******* High. You’d probably be able to fill in those * signs without even thinking of it. Ask anyone in Singapore what does ACS mean they would know. Ask them what does CDC, SYFC, MINDEF and even GRC mean, answers might not be as accurate. Maybe ask them, QWSS, QTSS, HSS, SSS , TSS and RSS(not Republic of Singapore’s Ship) They might not even know what they represent(PERSONAL). (Queensway, Queenstown, Henderson, Singapore Sports School, Tanglin, Riverside)
“Good schools are recognized for good “Produce”" -
Isn’t that rather true??..haha
I feel good schools are only good because most of the students that are accepted in are in nature good? agreed based on PSLE its also shown isn’t it? The higher scorers go into Schools like HCI or RI or SJI or RGS and RVHS. All these schools have high academic performance for their O level’s examinations. Does that mean that the schools are good or the students are good?(Question for thought) Well, based on Mr T’s theory, if you shift all the good students to the good school and all the bad students from a perceived to be “BAD” school then half the teachers in the GOOD school will quit. They would find more stress in their lives. Well isn’t true? That’s just one way to think of it. Another way would be that both schools would end up performing at roughly about the same standards. Well then the main idea is that STUDENTS themselves are the ones who are then limiting factor right? Then that poses an interesting question though, Then what are GOOD STUDENTS?
GOOD students are define by society as those who do well in their studies. Or are GOOD students define by their moral values or Character which MOE has been trying to emphasize?.. then BAD students are students who do BADLY in exams?…is that the label that we have on us?
“What schools are you from?”
FOR eg, ” HCI”
*Stamp on butt “Elite”*
Is that the label that our society is going to give to students like us? Is there a spot always reserved for GOOD SCHOOL graduates?Well i’ll have to leave you to think through it.(to be continued after exams)
